Almost 6 years ago, the mortgage industry suffered a major meltdown as a result of predatory lending practices. Since then, millions of foreclosed homes entered the housing market. Indeed, it is a tough time for the industry.

But if you want to think about the positive aspect of the foreclosure crisis, you cannot help but accept the fact it has created buying opportunities for many home buyers and real estate investors. There is currently no shortage of cheap homes to choose from and it is only a matter of finding the best deals offered for them.

Surprisingly, the silver lining to this otherwise grim situation does not end there. There are actually several other opportunities the housing crisis created.

Business of Rehabilitating Foreclosures

With the market brimming with mostly abandoned foreclosed properties, there are businesses that are thriving with the rehabilitation of these properties once buyers take them off the market. It is a fact foreclosures are sold in whatever condition they are in and it is expected for the houses to be in some stage of neglect especially if they have been vacant for some time. Some homes require much work while some only minor repairs.

There is also the business of cleaning out foreclosures especially those whose owners left so many of their things behind. Some counties and even lenders shell out money to have these properties cleaned out and kept in a respectable state.

Affordable Homes

In addition to these businesses, the foreclosure crisis has certainly made buying affordable homes possible. Non-profit organizations through various federal and state-funded programs have started rehabilitating distressed properties in order to offer them up as homes with mortgage payments within reach. Of course, since the houses were bought at below market value, it is not hard to sell them at an affordable price.

The foreclosure mess has indeed resulted to huge problems in the housing industry, most of which are actually still being experienced until now. But there are always the upside and you only need to look for these silver linings.
