How Can I Find Moving Storage Companies in My Area?

By Alex Rolim on Moving

Moving can be very frustrating – especially if you are moving over long distances, like during a cross-country relocation from one coast to the other. Even local moves can get hairy without the right support and tools. For many, thankfully, moving companies exist – and can deliver the right support, equipment, and expertise you need for your move.

How Can I Find Moving Storage Companies in My Area?

Here is a simple guide to finding the best moving storage companies in your local area for your next move.

Going Online for the Best Results

Typically, moving storage companies that exist in your local area have websites that they use to promote themselves and book reservations. (Not all do, though, which is why we will cover finding companies who do not have an online presence.)

Sometimes the best way to find a good company is just to go to a search engine and start typing away. Choose a good keyword phrase, such as “moving storage company”, “moving company”, or “storage company”, depending on what you need. (More on that later). Add your local area, such as your city, county, or state, and hit enter.

This may not give you a precise company, but it can be helpful in creating a list of possible choices to narrow down later. Try writing down the names on the first page of results and then setting that list aside.

You can also use online directories to help you find the websites of companies that service your local area, but no matter what course of action you decide to do, it helps to first identify what you need. When people ask for a “moving storage company”, they typically mean a company that provides a way to store and move goods – in other words, a portable storage company. A “moving company”, by contrast, typically just deals in loading, transporting, and unloading goods across distances and may not provide long-term storage.

Going Offline for Options

If the internet is not helping you, you can go to traditional offline methods to help – methods that, ironically enough, are unfamiliar to many people in this day and age thanks to the internet!

One choice is the Yellow Pages book that many still receive. Yellow Pages is a good source of local businesses in a particular area. Chances are, if a company doesn’t have a website, they have an ad or listing with Yellow Pages.

Asking a real estate agent for a reference is also recommended, as they usually know of local businesses that can help.

Narrowing Down Your List

Once you have a list of options of moving storage companies, you can narrow down the list. One good strategy is to use online rating sites to find reviews of these companies, mainly as a way to see if they are worth pursuing or are companies to avoid.

You can also call and interview each company, asking them key questions such as:

  • What areas do you service?
  • What is your availability?
  • What are your rates? How do you determine them?
  • What is your service radius?
  • What size units do you have?
  • Are there any other additional services you perform, like packing?

Following this guide can help you find the right moving storage company for your next move, which can save you time, money, and stress.
