Home Remodeling Tips: Emerging Trends in Dining Room Designs

By Alex Rolim on Home Remodelling

Home remodeling techniques need not always be traditional and safe. Some of the more popular trends are unusual or fall under the so-called "mismatch" trend. Playing with colors and furnishings has become popular among homeowners.

House Remodeling

One area of the house that is often the subject of non-traditional renovation is the dining room. For one, not every household actually use the dining room for dining. There are some who convert the place to serve a different purpose, while others overhaul the room to give it a modern look. Here are some remodeling options you may want to consider.

1. Convert the room. Some households do not actually use the dining room for eating dinner or lunch since they usually eat in the kitchen or in front of the television in the living room. If your dining room is seldom used, maybe you can convert it into something else. It can be used as a place to entertain guests where you can have cocktail drinks. Putting a minibar and replacing the big dining table and chairs with a couch and several smaller chairs where people can sit around and talk is one of the better ideas.

2. Go for the modern look. The traditional look of a dining room is characterized by a long and rectangular wooden dining table, surrounded by high-backed wooden chairs where the family sit and have their meals. If you feel like your dining room is in need of a new look, try going for something non-traditional, like a rounded glass-topped table that is more often seen in living rooms and does not require a table cloth. Start by getting a great-looking table that catches your fancy and then choose the chairs that you feel will go well with the table. They do not need to match, but they should complement.

3. Relocate the dining room. If you have a sunroom or a porch with screens, you can convert it into a dining room instead. This will provide more light and will be somewhat less formal than your old dining room and may encourage members of the family to actually sit together and share a meal. Use a wooden table that is more commonly seen in picnic parks (but in a better condition) and replace the high-backed chairs with benches. The mood will be more relaxed, like having a picnic.

4. Combine different shapes. There is no rule that states that the dining room should always follow the traditional look. You can make it more fun by replacing the uniform chairs around the big dining table with mismatched or different-shaped seats. You can opt for a single color, but different designs. For example, use single high-backed chairs at both ends of the table and at the center of each side; then use settees to fill up the vacant spaces around the table. You can do without the multiple chair legs that seem to get on the way every time diners need to stand or leave their seats and at the same time, create something fun. Home remodeling can be as simple as a change in furniture.
